Planned Giving
Planned Giving: The Benefits of Giving Wisely to CNHS
You believe in the work of the Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc. and you want to make sure that we will continue our efforts well into the future. You want to make a meaningful donation that makes a difference for us, but are concerned about your own future financial needs and those of your family.
Planned Giving gives you the unique opportunity to endow CNHS with a valuable contribution, while reaffirming your financial and family commitments. You don’t have to use cash to make your gift. You may already be holding assets that would benefit CNHS more than they do you, such as life insurance policies you no longer need, a parcel of real estate or a collection of books or artwork that you no longer have room to display. You can even make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime by making CNHS a beneficiary of your will, revocable trust or retirement plan, and leave your cash flow and current financial plans undisturbed. All of these options are called planned gifts. Making a charitable gift can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in life.
Use the following statements to help assess whether or not planned giving is right for you.
My gift will serve to advance the mission of the Cherokee National Historical Society
Believing in the CNHS cause is paramount to gift giving satisfaction. Before making a major gift, review the important mission and consistent accomplishments of CNHS. Then plan your gift to further this mission.
I am giving the most appropriate asset
Sometimes a gift of real estate, stocks or other investment can be more beneficial than simply writing a check. Before giving, carefully review your assets.
This gift will not endanger my financial security
Though we eagerly seek capital resources to advance our mission and goals, CNHS is always mindful of the needs and other obligation of our donors.
I have selected the best way to make my gift
An outright gift definitely has its advantages, but sometimes a deferred gift that provides you a lifetime income can be more practical and beneficial. Giving through a will, an annuity, a trust or an endowment are possibilities to consider.
I have considered the tax consequences of my gift
Making a tax-wise gift can actually help you give more than you might otherwise be able to do. This is especially true of an asset that contains long-term capital gain.
I have sought counsel from a competent adviser
In general, the larger the gift in relation to your overall assets, the more important it is to get wise counsel from a qualified estate planning attorney and CPA.
